3rd region as a transit ok?

Is it possible to fly Thailand to Shanghai and transit via HKG back to Thailand ? Is HKG considered a 3rd region even though it's only a transit?

HKG is always considered as a third region. The Chinese immigration does not care whether you clear immigration in HK or not, as long as they see you as departing to a third country/region.
