About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hanoi-Hong Kong-Shanghai-USA

Hello. My trip is Hanoi-HKG-PVG-USA by air. Would like to stay for 3 days in Shanghai. Do I qualify for the 144 hr visa free in Shanghai? I received one answer already that I don't since I have a short layover in Hong Kong. Is this correct? I read that Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are considered third region for the 144 hr free transit. Please share your thoughts.

You are not eligible if your flight from Shanghai to the US has a stop in Hong Kong. Otherwise, you are eligible.
