Cruise from Shanghai/Japan/Shanghai - Visa?

I am flying to Shanghai, spending one night, and boarding a cruise which goes to Japan. The cruise returns to Shanghai where I will spend one night before flying back to the US. Is a Visa required? Can I get a 24 or 72 hour free transit?

Brooke, if you returns to Shanghai from a different country, and then fly back back to the US, you can use the 144hrs free transit in Shanghai for both ways.

Do I have to get a 144 hours free transit pass at the airport when I arrive (for the one day spent in Shanghai before my cruise), and another at the cruise terminal when I disembark the ship (for the one day spent in Shanghai before flying back to the US)?? Are there stations at the cruise port for this purpose?

Yes, you are right. You need to get the first free transit pass at the airport when you arrive and the second when you disembark the ship. There is a special lane at the cruise port for this purpose, don't worry.
