About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

I am flying to Beijing from Hanoi via Guangzhou and then Flying to London from Beijing.

we do not have a direct flight from Hanoi to beijing, we have a cooection in Guangzhou. We then want to stay 2 days in Beijing. If the flight was direct this would count as a stop over of less than 72 hours, But as we actually land in Guanzhou before flying to Beijing does the stopover rule still apply. We will be in China for 72 hours only

Ginney, sorry, but you cannot enjoy free transit in China if you travel like that. You should apply for a transit G visa in advance.

Yes, Edmond is correct.. I did something similar last year & was held in custody in the Guangzhou airport for 11 hours before being expelled from the country. I was put on a flight to Hong Kong where I was able to get a direct flight to my original destination, Chengdu, then on to Amsterdam.
I would suggest you fly from Hanoi to Hong Kong then Beijing if that's possible...or get a visa.
