Layover in Guangzhou

I'm a US passenger flying from Thailand with a 12 hour layover in Guangzhou. I was going to fly up to Beijing to visit the Great Wall of China during that period. What all will I need to make this happen?

Shimmy, you need to apply for a tourist visa for that if you want to do that.
