About:China Visa

I have a group of 10 from USA coming into the cruise port in Shanghai from Japan on Celebrity.

We depart that same evening from Pudong. It appears we do not need a Visa, but do we need to do anything in advance for the free-entry requirement?

Betty, if you will go to a third country region rather than Japan after visiting Shanghai, you can enjoy free transit in Shanghai. You need to provide your passport, and the tickets.

We are getting off the ship and returning to the USA. I think we do need one if not going to a third country, right?

Based on what you said, your travel route will be USA-Japan-Shanghai-USA, and then you can enjoy free transit in Shanghai. No visa is needed for that.
