Christopher, if your wife got the green card before your son was born, your son should apply for Chinese visa.

My son was born before she got her green card. She had a student visa when she gave birth to my son. Are we still okay to apply a china visa for my son?

I'm afraid not. Your son should apply for a China Travel Document instead.
