school trip to china and visa requirements?

My son is going to China on a school trip in July 2013...at which time should be applying for the Visa? Which type do we need and what are the documents we will require to take to the office in Toronto?

1. A Chinese L visa will do;
2. The best time to apply is June, 2013, about one month before the depature time.
3. The following documents are needed:
(1) The original passport remaining to be valid for at least six months from the date of application with at least 2 blank visa pages.
(2) One completed Visa Application Form with a recently-taken (within 6 months)colorful passport,white background photo (48mm*33mm) stuck on it;
(3) An invitation letter from the school to be visited.
(4)Round-trip air ticket booking record and hotel reservation
