Mary, yes, you can use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai if you travel like that. You’d better confirm that with the cruise ship company.

Now that I have been advised I qualify for a free visa where do I obtain one? We are arriving at Shanghai port. Also if the time starts at 00:01 on the 18th I would only need the 24 hour free visa? Do I obtain this from the cruise line since we are arriving at the port not the airport? This site is very helpful. Thank you

You should inform the cruise ship company that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai when you board the plane in Japan.
When you arrive in Shanghai port, you can apply for the free transit at the immigration office.
