I am planning a trip to Shanghai. Can I do the 144 hour visa free transit when my departure airport on my outbound flight is the same as the arrival airport on my home bound flight?

Bjarke, as long as you depart from Shanghai to the third country or region, you can enjoy 144h visa exemption transit. For example, US - Shanghai- Hong Kong -US is OK.
