About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hello, and thank you for your time. I'm traveling to Australia from the United States,

via Beijing and Kuala Lumpur. I would like to know if I can stop in Beijing both ways. On my way to Australia I would only need to stop for 5 hours to wait for my next flight (I assume this is a simple 24 hour direct transit), but in my return to the United States I would like to request the 72 hours free transit so that I can see the city. Is it ok that I'm stoping in Beijing both ways? Also, before buying my ticket, I would like to know whether is true that the 72 hours start counting on the first hour of the following day. I'm looking at a ticket that arrives to Beijing at 01:30 AM on April 16th, but my flight back to the United States doesn't leave until 16:30 on April 19th: is that ok or do I need to find a different flight that leaves earlier? Thank you very much for your help!

Yes, it is ok for you to stop in Beijing both ways.
It is said that the 72 hours in Beijing start from the moment you arrive. I’m afraid if you arrive at 01:30 AM on April 16th, you need to leave before 01:30 AM on April 19th.
