About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I'm planning on flying into Guangzhou for about 50 hours to visit a friend.

Then I will fly to Shanghai for a small layover (I won't leave the airport) before flying out of China. I am a US passport holder. Am I eligible for the 72 hour transit visa since I am technically going to two Chinese cities?

If so, you won’t be able to use the 72 hour free transit in Guangzhou. You need to apply for a tourist L type for that.
