2 layovers in Shanghai, then Kunming from LA to Bangkok

Do I need a visa for 2 layovers in China? LA to Shanghai, Shanghai to Kunming, Kunming to Bangkok. It's a total of 23 hours. Each layover is about 2 hours. Are they long enough to make my next flight and will I be able to fly to Bangkok without a visa?

Surely, you need a Chinese Visa. Do you need to change your flight for both layover?

This flight is Thursday so I may have to rebook. I do change flights for both layovers.

I think I read somewehre that the 24 hours visa free transit support 2 stopovers. However, if this can go successfully also depends on the staff working for frontier inspection. By the way, personally speaking 2 hours may be a little limited for trip from Kunming to Bangkok since immigration check involved.
