About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa for a third country or region

I am flying into Beijing and have 40 hours between my arrival and departure flight. I am from Canada and will be flying from Japan. With a small lay over in Shanghai. Do I need a visa for a third Country or region in order to get the 72 hour free transit?
Thank you!

Taylor, you mentioned you would have stopovers in both Shanghai and Beijing? If so, I'm afraid you can't enjoy the 72hrs free transit in Beijing because of the layover in Shanghai.

Taylor, I'm afraid the layover in Shanghai counts, even though it's only two hours. You can double check this with the airline. On your way from Vancouver to Tokyo, you don't need the transit permit.
