About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

How about this scenario?

I am flying into Hong Kong International airport from SFO and staying overnight at the Grand Hyatt HK in March. The next morning, I will take the train from Hung Hom station in Hong Kong to Guangzhou East Rail Station. I will tour the Guandong province and stay overnight at the Marriott Tianhe Guangzhou. The next day, I will fly to Chiang Mai. I will be in mainland China less than 72 hours. Can I get a 72 hour exemption at the train station immigration or somewhere else? Do I need to apply for an 'L' tourist visa? I hold a US Passport. Thank you.

Russ, no, you cannot get the 72 hour free transit at the train station because the 72 hour free transit is only applicable to flight travelers. I’m afraid you need to apply for a tourist L type in advance if you travel like that.

If I fly from REP to CTU and then depart CTU to YYZ with a connecting flight through PVG, is this allowed?
