My daughters and I are going to have a layover in Beijing for 9 hours and 40 minutes.

Will we be able to use the free 24 transit visa, and would you advice the tour bus to visit the city?

Elo, you can enjoy the visa-free transit in PEK, but if you want to get out of the airport, you may need to apply for a stay permit at the airport.
You are advised to take airport shuttle bus Wangfujing line to the city center. You may stop by Wangfujng Commercial Street or take a taxi to the nearby Tiananmen Square, which is the landmark of BJ.
