About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK to Malaysia return via Beijing on transit both ways

Hello, My husband and I are travelling to Malaysia via Beijing on 29/4/17 and return same route on 24/5/17. He has a British passport and I have a Malaysian passport. Do we both need a transit visa in Beijing? We won't be leaving the airport in Beijing both ways. The transit time is 4 hours going and 8 hours on return. We would appreciate if you could let us know if we need transit permits and if so how to apply for them. Thank you.
