About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am planning to fly from Uk with emirates airline via Dubai to Shanghai

then with a different airline onto Malaysia.
I will have 2 return tickets with different airlines i.e.
Emirates from the Uk via Dubai to Shanghai
Different airline from Shanghai to Malaysia.Will I be able to take advantage of the 144 day hour visa to stayover in Shanghai on both my outward and return journeys?
