About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is it possible to visit Xian on any of the free transit, or do I need a full tourist visa?

I'm travelling from UK to Australia, via Beijing both ways, and looking to spend up to 4 days each way as a stopover, but really want to get to see the warriors on one of the trips (which I could cut short to meet the 72 hour free transit requirements, if that works).

You need a visa. Without a visa you can only transit in one city.
