I want to travel to bejing from dtw and back within the 72 hours

do i need a visa if am a us citizen?

Kevin, you need to apply for a tourist L type entry permit if you travel like that.
If you can travel like DTW-Beijing-HK-DTW, you can enjoy the 72 hour free transit in Beijing, and then no entry permit will be required.
