About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa or 24hr direct transit permit? Travelling from South Africa

We will be flying to Phuket from South Africa in December 2016. We have a 14 hour layover in Beijing and would like to visit the Great Wall.

1) Are we required to get a Chinese entry permit before we leave to enable us to leave the airport for the day tour?
2) How do we apply for the 72 hour/24 hour transit permits?
3) Do we need both a transit permit and a Chinese entry permit?

We will be returning with the same layover times. Do we need to reapply on return?

1. Brett, no, you don’t need to apply for a Chinese entry permit because you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing.
2. After you arrive at the airport, you can follow the direction boards to the immigration office to apply for a temporary stay permit by proving your passport, the air tickets and valid entry permit for Thailand.
3. The Chinese entry permit won’t be necessary when you eligible for the 24 hour direct transit.

Excuse my ignorance, what valid entry permit do we require for Thailand?
I understand that Thailand is a Visa free country to visit.
We do have valid passports and airplane tickets indicating our destination and flight times.

If you don’t need visa for Thailand, you can just provide the air tickets and your passport to apply for the temporary stay permit.
