Shanghai visit

Hi, a friend and I are traveling to shanghai pudong from LaX. We arrive at 3:45 pm on thursday. We leave pudong to Tokyo at 9am that following Sunday. We are in shanghai for less than 72 hours and we are both us Citizens with valid us passports. Should we be fine? Do we just show our itinerary at the airport?
Thank you.

Daniel, yes, you will be fine. Both of you will be eligible for the 72 hour free transit in Shanghai. You can just provide your passport, and air tickets as well as valid entry permit for Japan.
