can an indian citizen get transit visa if layover is less than 72hrs at pek airport?

Hi I have an Indian passport but traveling from Auckland to India. I have a layover at PEK Beijing airport for 16hrs 30 mins in which time I would like to visit the Great Wall of China. Will I get the permission to leave the airport during my layover time n do so n then catch my connecting flight from PEK airport to delhi India???? Please let me know as soon as possible.

Tenz, you are eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing if you travel like that. You need to apply for a temporary stay permit at Beijing airport and then you can go out to visit the Great Wall. The stay permit is free of charge.
