About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a visa and not the 72 hour free transit?

I am having issues with Southern China Airlines regarding my flights. They cancelled my flights from Rome to Beijing. On reissuing me a flight with another airline they said I needed an entry permit. Is this the case?
My flights are as follows.
Rome to Beijing with a different airline (at the end I need to get my luggage etc)
Then southern China

2016-12-09 CAN(GuangZhou)--MEL(MELBOURNE) 1755 0640+1

2016-12-30 MEL(MELBOURNE)--CAN(GuangZhou) 1130 1810

2016-12-30 CAN(GuangZhou)--FCO(Rome) 2130 0600+1
Can you please help? It seems ridiculous that I have to get an entry permit!!

As long as you don't tell us the details of your Rome - Beijing flight, nobody can give you an exactly answer.
If your transit time is under 24h there's no need for an visa.
Is it over 24h you have to apply for one.

I arrive in Beijing on 2016-12-09 at 6:05 either with Alitalia or 10 mins later with anther airline (this flight has not been confirmed). So I'll be at the airport 3 hours in Beijing and 7 hours in GuangKhou.
then the next 2 flights are with Southern China

Your transit is under 24h and you can use the 24h direct transit.
No need for an visa.

Thanks. Is a direct transfer still OK if I have to go between terminals?
