Here are our flight plans with US Passport:
MSP to NRT then NRT to PVG (Shanghai) and stay 9 days around Shanghai the fly on day 9 from PVG To ICN (South Korea) and spend one night then fly from ICN to MSP (Minneapolis Minnesota)
HND to SHA with 7 day stay in Shanghai
SHA to HND (1.5 hr layover) to SFO

The first plan, MSP - NRT - PVG - ICN - MSP, is eligible for the 240h visa-free transit but HND - SHA - HND does not qualify the 240 since it's a round trip to HND, not an international transit route.
