can you use the 144 hour visa for a short vacation?

Good Day;
Are you required to have another country (third) for the free transit or can you leave your home destination and return to the same home destination to fulfill the requirements. I am looking to book a short holiday into Shanghai and want to see if I can avoid the whole process.
