Hi,I am an Australia citizen, I was told at the Chinese embassy in Ulaan baatar that I don't need a visa if I arrive to Beijing by train and fly out of Beijing within 72 hours, is this correct?

Robert, I'm afraid they gave you the wrong answer. If you travel by train to Beijing, you cannot enjoy the 72hrs free transit facility there. You can use the 24h direct transit if you can leave Beijing for a third country within 24 hours.
