I am a US citizen returning to the US from Myanmar. Our first stop is Kunming, China and will be

There for 14 hours then flying to Shanghai, China for 23 hours. Do I need Chinese visa?

Maria, so your total layover time in PRC will be 37 hours? If yes, you need to apply for a transit G visa or tourist L visa for that.
