About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Frankfurt, Germany - Istanbul - Shanghia, Shanghia - Istanbul- Germany.

I am flying from Frankfurt Germany to Shanghai Pudong via Istanbul and then back to Frankfurt via Istanbul. I expect to be in Shanghai for around 4 days. Is this route acceptable for the 144 hour visa, or do I have to travel directly to Shanghai without a stop over? Is it better to travel direct and then return with a stop over?

Edward, this route is not eligible for the 144 hour free transit because you will fly back to Istanbul after staying in Shanghai. In principle, you should fly to a third country or region instead of Istanbul after staying in Shanghai. Actually, if you travel direct to Shanghai and then return with a stopover in Istanbul, and then you qualify for the 144 hour free transit.
