About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

can I use this when I just book a return flight Amsterdan -> Shanghai without any other stop-overs

Staying in Shanghai just a couple of nights...
or do I have to visit a third country as part of my journey?

You only can take the 144h Free Transit if you leave Shanghai to a third country
