John, after staying for less than 24 hours in Guangzhou, if you will fly to a third country or region instead of the last one you came from, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit there. You just need to apply for a temporary stay permit which is free of charge at the immigration office and then you can leave the airport.

Is this still true that a Thai can obtain a free transit for 24 hours upon arrival into Beijing China? Enroute to Bangkok from the US. Thai passport holder. US tourist entry permit holder.
I have read mixed replies. Seems as though the Chinese are no longer granting the 24 hours free transit to Thais.
Thank you.

There are no official documents to prove this, but it seemed that many Chinese airlines will not board any Thai passport holder without a transit visa since 2016. You could get a G (transit) to play it safe, or call the immigration inspection station at your city of arrival to see whether you'll need a visa. This policy is unpublished and may be subject to changes any time.
