72 hour Policy for Beijing

I want to fly from Bangkok to Beijing then from Beijing to Chicago...
Will this fall under the 72 hour policy? Can I really just show up at the airport in Beijing from Bangkok and leave within 72 hours?...

Zee, if you transit in Beijing for less than 72 hours, you can make use of the 72 hour free transit in Beijing.
You can just show up at the airport and then leave within 72 hours.

Thanks for responding. But one more thing... I want to walk the great wall within these 72 hours. Is there any limitations on things and places to see and go within the 72 hour. Also Would I have to inform the airline in Bangkok that I want to do the 72 hour or when I land in Beijing?

Zee, don’t worry! You are allowed to visit Great Wall when you enjoy the 72 hour free transit in Beijing.
You need to inform the airline that you want to use the 72 hour free transit when you board the plane in Bangkok.
