72 hour policy for beijing

I want to fly from Bangkok to Beijing then from Beijing to Chicago...Will this fall under the 72 hour policy? Can I really just show up at the airport in Beijing from Bangkok and leave within 72 hours?...

Thanks for responding. But one more thing... I want to walk the great wall within these 72 hours. Is there any limitations on things and places to see and go within the 72 hour. Also Would I have to inform the airline in Bangkok that I want to do the 72 hour or when I land in Beijing?
