entering china on a tourist L type for school

Hi,

I have a 10 year tourist L type that allows me to stay 120 days in PRC. I am starting school in PRC this Fall and I was wondering if I need to get a X type to convert my visa into a student residency permit or can I enter with my current tourist L type and have that converted into a student residency permit? I tried calling the Chinese Consulate for answers but the line is always busy.
