About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying Bishkek-Urumqi-Beijing-Toronto

I am a Canadian and intend fly from Bishkek to Urumqi to Beijing to transfer to Toronto because there is no direct flight from Bishkek to Beijing.

What will happen when I get to Urumqi? Urumqi is not on the list of 72 hr free transit cities. Must I have a visa to be able to make the Beijing connection to Toronto?

From what I understand of the rules above, I cannot arrive in Urumqi and fly to Beijing using the 72 hr or the transfer rule and therefore cannot connect to Toronto. Correct?

If no entry permit is required, how long can I stay in Beijing?

Crispin, I’m afraid you need to apply for a tourist L type or transit G type ahead of your trip because you cannot use the free transit if you travel like that.

Well if your transfer time in Urumqi is not longer as 2h and the total transfer time in China is under 24h then you don't need any kind of visa for that trip.
