About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

I am planning a trip and will be flying from the US to Tokyo

Tokyo to Beijing (plan on staying less than 72 hours); Beijing to Hong Kong; Hong Kong to Thainland; etc. does this qualify for the 72 hour free visa period? It is not a layover but a direct destination with planned period of time.
