Owing to the long distance, you are advised to travel by air. You may fly to Kunming first (about 3 hours). Then, fly to Urumqi (about 4 hours). Have a nice trip!

Another option is you could check flight connction from India to Central Asia ( Stan country ,Uzbekistan , Kyrgystan , Kazakhstan , Tadjikistan , Turkmensiatn ...) there are direct flight from there to Urumqi .
of course it will deends on air cost .
