U.S. tourist applying for a Chinese visa in Tokyo

Hello,
I am currently in Japan and have a one-way flight booked to Shanghai for October 1st 2016. I have everything I need to apply for the entry permit except for the onward flight. The reason I am hesitant to book my onward flight is because I don't know how long I am allowed to stay in China. Do I only get 30 days or do I get 60/90? Once I know the perimeters I am more than willing to book my return flight. I want to stay in china for 60 to 90 days.

Sam, I’m afraid the round trip air tickets are needed when you apply for the tourist L type.
Or if you have a friend in PRC, you can ask him/her to write an invitation letter to you. In this case, the round trip air tickets may not be needed.

Right, but how long does the tourist L type last? I need to know whether I can stay for 30, 60, or 90 days before I book my return ticket. I want to stay for 90 days, but if I book a flight 90 days out and they only give me 30 days then I have to book another flight.

Dear, I cannot tell you for sure how many days you can get. Usually, the stay duration of a tourist L type is 30 days. But sometimes, it may be 60 or 90 days, too. The consular officers will give you proper stay duration according to your travel itinerary and the actual days you need.
Even though you cannot get 90 days, you can apply for an extension after you enter PRC and in this case, you can possibly stay there for 90 days.
