About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit
Can we get a 72 hrs free transit if traveling from USA to Shanghai, Shanghai back to the USA?

Savon, if you travel like that, it’s impossible for you to get the 72 hour free transit. The 72 hour policy stipulates that one should fly to a third country or region after staying in Shanghai for less than 72 hours. You need to apply for a normal visa in advance.0
