About:China Visa Application Procedure and Fee

Can we stay in China for 3 months as a tourist?

Hi,
My husband and I are Australian citizens. We would like to visit China as tourists for a period of 3 months duration. Our intended plan is to make our way from Hong Kong (no visa required for less than 14 day visit we understand) to mainland PRC. As independent travelers we intend to stay on the eastern part of mainland and slowly travel up to Beijing then to the port city of Tianjin. We depart from Tianjin on a cruise ship returning to Australia. Please advise what sort of entry permit we should apply for to allow us to be in PRC for up to 3 months.
Thank you,
Patsy & Leigh

Patricia, actually, Australian passport holders can enjoy free entry to HK for a stay of not exceeding 90 days.
Usually, when you apply for a tourist L type, you can possibly get stay duration of 30 days or 60 days. And it’s hard to get 90-day stay duration. But there is no need to worry because you can apply for an extension of the L type 7 days earlier before it expires. In this case, it’s possible for you to stay for 3 months in PRC.

Thank you for that very reassuring information. If I understand correctly, when we apply before we leave Australia, I will request a 90 single entry type L and hopefully, be given permission to stay 3 months straight up. I think applying, while still in China, for an extension to our L type could present difficulties with the language barrier. I would like to go ahead and book our air tickets but I am reluctant to without firm assurance that we will be granted a 90 day tourist L type before leaving Australia. What would be the best approach? We would be looking at a departure date of mid July to Hong Kong, staying there for 7 to 14 days, then entering mainland China. Can I apply now for our L types and have the date to commence at the end of July 2016?
Thank you,
Patsy
