Singapore return trip to Shanghai : do I need a visa for 48 hours ?

I have to fly from Singapore to Shanghai and return to Singapore. I will stay 24 hours only in Shanghai . Can I take a visa on arrival ?
Also, is it still OK if I get an extension to visit Xian for 24 hours ?
Many thanks in advance for your answer.

You wanna use the visa free policy ( visa on arrival is totally different )?
Sorry but it's not possible when you fly back to the country you started from.
It is also not possible to visit Xi'an when you use the visa free policy in Shanghai.

Claire, if you have a Singaporean passport, you can enjoy the 15-day free entry policy. And you can visit both Shanghai and Xian.
