About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Shanghai, then Xian, then USA

Hi... We are US citizens going to Hong Kong (from US) in June... can we go from HKG to Shanghai (visit in Shanghai for 2 days under 144 hr rule), then on to Xian (for 72 hr rule), then return to US and be able to do so without China Visa's? Asking because I am confused about the rules about staying within the province. Thank you.

For this route you need a chinese entry permit.
72/144 h don't work as you can't have 2 stops in PRC. 2 stops just allowed for the 24h transit.
