Shenzhen from HK via US passport

I'll be going to HK for a few days and while I'm there would like to spend a day in Shenzhen . I've heard that the border they won't issue the typical 5-day visas that they issue to most other countries. Is this true? If it is then will I be able to obtain one somewhere in HK and for how much?

Matt, it’s true. The 5-day VOA is not issued to US passport holders.
If you want to travel to Shenzhen for sightseeing purpose, you need to apply for a tourist L type in advance. If possible, you’d better apply for it in your home country and it costs USD 140. Because if you don’t have HK residence permit, it’s difficult for you to apply for it in HK. If you apply for it in HK, you should apply for it at the office of the commissioner of the ministry of foreign affairs of PRC in HK SAR. And it costs HK$1100.
