Annie, if you depart from HK to Shanghai and then back to Shanghai, you need to get an L type entry permit for mainland. If you depart from HK to Shanghai and then leave for Macau, and you are from one of the 51 countries which are eligible for 144-hour free transit policy, you may not need to get the L type.

If so, you need to apply for a tourist L type in advance. The required documents include your passport and copy of its data page, the application form with a recently-taken passport-sized color photo attached, round trip tickets and hotel reservation as well as your residence permit in HK. Proof of your financial support may be required, too.
Afterwards, submit your application to the office of the commissioner of the ministry of foreign affairs of PRC in HK SAR to apply for it.
