About:Visa Policy of China

Do you need a visa if only visiting from Australia to Shanghai within 72 hours.

The departure will be straight back to Melbourne Australia

As you returns to the country of departure direct after the stay in Shanghai, you cannot enjoy the 72 or 144 hours free transit. So you need to prepare an entry permit ahead of your trip.
