Hong Kong to Shanghai to Bangkok

Hello,

I am a US citizen flying to Hong Kong for 5 nights. I would like to fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai to visit a friend, then fly from Shanghai to Bangkok. Do I qualify for the 144 hour visa?
