In Beijing airport, how long I will need to allow when checking in before my flight.

I plan on checking in online first, but I will have to check a bag, and I'm going to the US, will I need to pass through any customs sort of thing?
I don't want to miss my flight, but I also don't want to spend too much time waiting inside when I could have been in the city!
