About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

What about this scenario, can I use the 72 hour visa free transit?

I am from the US and I want to visit Japan and China. Can I fly from the US to Tokyo, and then from tokyo to beijing, stay in beijing for 72 hours and then fly back to America?
