international transit in Guangzhou

Hello,

will fly from Vancouver to Bangkok by China Southern in a few days. transit in Guangzhou for two and a half-three hours.
do I need to pass through passport control, to get my baggage and check in it again on flight from Guangzhou to Bangkok? or should I just to get off the plane in Guangzhou, find proper gate for my flight from Guangzhou to Bangkok and that is it?
