About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US citizen flying into Hong Kong. Next day flying to Chengdu returning to HongKong.

From Hong Kong taking cruise to Thailand and Vietnam. Assume 72 hour free transit applies. Assume don't need a visa.
Correct?

Dear Ray, I’m afraid it’s not correct because after the transit in Chengdu, you fly back to the region of departure. But according to the policy, you should fly to a third country or region. So if you fly in that route, you should apply for an entry permit ahead of time.
