About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour visa eligibility for Beijing if we connect through Shanghai?

Hi. We cannot find a reasonably priced direct flight Tokyo to Beijing. We have found a flight that makes a 1 hour 10 min stopover in Shanghai, then the same flight continues on to Beijing. We will then continue on to HK and then back to Tokyo via Shanghai. Does this route make us eligible for the 72 hour free transit in Beijing?

Sal, sorry to say that you are not eligible for the 72-hour transit on your way from Tokyo to HK because you stop over in two mainland cities. However, on your way back from HK to Tokyo, you are eligible for the 72-hour direct transit policy. In addition, when flying from Tokyo to HK, if your total layover is not beyond 24 hours in mainland, you can use the 24-hour direct transfer policy.
